The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is being told not to worry about what others think of me. “No one else lives your life and pays your bills every day,” the advice giver said. “You are the one who lives your life everyday. Make decisions you are proud of, don’t let others influence you on what to think or do with your life. Do what makes you happy. Don’t let anyone live rent free in your head.
When I start worrying about what others think of me, I try to take myself back to the conversation I was having about not letting others live rent free in my head. Other people don’t walk in my shoes every day. They don’t live my life for me. I will do what makes me happy. I will make the decision I need to make without fear of judgement from others.
For years, I lived in a prison of other people’s opinions of me. I made decisions based on what other people thought I should do. I let myself feel shame and guilt when I made decisions that went against what others thought I should do. This really prevented me from being myself or living at all.
I feel more free these days, even though it can be hard to go against what others think I should do with my life. Ultimately, I live my life for myself and that is who I need to think of when making life decisions. No one else is living my life but me.
